Mama Know Love (Mother's Day Tribute)
One day out of the year, we have an opportunity to give back to the one woman who has given us so much: our moms. There are so many things I can say to and about my mother but the truth is there isn’t enough ink in my pen to express how much I truly value her. So, Mary Ann Robinson, this is my open letter to you.
Life has its way of being difficult and there have been times when I’ve felt like giving up, when things were not going my way. Each time, you were there to remind me of my worth as a human being. I remember calling you a couple weeks ago and without me saying a word, you knew something was wrong with me. Even with distance separating us, you always find a way to comfort and let me know that everything is going to be okay. Its special talent like this that lets me know how special of a lady you are. I’ve seen your love fluently in action throughout my 28 years of existence. From attending all of my sporting events to praying for me while I lay stricken to the hospital bed unable to move, you've always shown me what the true definition of love meant.
Thank you for showing me grace and mercy when I didn’t deserve it. Lord knows that I dont have to remind you of how hardheaded I was growing up. There have been countless occasions where you bailed me out of a tight jams only for me to continue to make the same silly mistakes. At times, it was easier for me to take my frustrations out on you rather than anyone else in this world because I knew that you would always be there no matter what. It made no sense and there was no excuse for me to treat you that way period! Through all of the backlash, rudeness, selfish acts, and unkind treatment you still loved me. For that, I am sorry and forever grateful for you having a heart to still care, pray for me, and love me without any limitations.
Thank you for making ways to get me the things I wanted. I appreciate your generosity and effort. I know as a kid I was expensive and demanding. I remember you struggling to make ends meet but yet some how you still came through and provided everything I needed. You sacrificed so much in order to give me a better life than you had when you were a kid. All those vacations, the sponsoring of my sporting activities, the latest fashion trends, video game systems, summer camps, etc: you gave me an opportunity to do things that other kids didn't have the privilege of experiencing.
No matter how crazy my dreams were, you encouraged me to keep reaching for the unreachable and never settle for anything less than I deserved. Thank you for always believing in me when everyone else said I was stupid. I remember when I was about to turn Public Figure into such a negative brand and you told me to utilize it as a positive force to uplift others. With that sound advice, I give you all the credit for helping me make it into something I never could've imagined. You're the real Public Figure.
As I get older, I realize more and more how much you have done for me and continue to do every day. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anything as special as the love between a mother and a son. You are my best friend and you always have been whether you know it or not. You are the epitome of what a mother should be like. Behind God, you are the one person that I hold high on a pedestal. Not just because you birthed me, but because you are the first example of love I've ever known. Happy Mother's Day.
Your baby boy,
Little Rickey
